So I've been thinking a bit about why I feel like Dragonsoul no longer holds my attention like it used to. Some of the reasons are obvious:
- they took 4 months to go from O6 to O7 and released zero heroes during that timespan - BORING and STAGNANT
- they refuse to make even small updates to the current rune system to improve QoL (500 limit, looking at you) - FRUSTRATING
- they take too long to balance obviously OP heroes like Archer and Plague - FRUSTRATING and STAGNANT
- they break things like matchmaking (which caused the only guild on our server that could actually challenge us to break up as many of their members quit) and take too long to fix them (3 months, IIRC) - FRUSTRATING and STAGNANT
Obviously the list of those sorts of things goes on and on. But the thing that's been rattling around inside my head is ...
Dragonsoul seems like a solved puzzle at this point.
Outside of the grind/progression aspect, there is another aspect that I have always enjoyed in DS and that is the competitive aspect. Fighting in Guild War and Coli/Fp.
But at this point, GW is a snooze-fest. It's too easy. There's no challenge in individual attacks, which means the only challenge is in fighting for first. Before GREE broke matchmaking, we were bouncing back and forth with Paradise Island for first and second for weeks on end. When they broke matchmaking, a lot of PI quit because GREE ruined the one part of the game that really mattered. Our only competition on the server was gone ... which didn't matter, because matchmaking was broken and terrible guilds like Drachenblut were able to jump from the 15-20 range to number one. Now that matchmaking is fixed ... nobody will be able to take number 1 from us.
Last week we went 5-4 on defense which was a surprise, but we started in 3rd (thanks to someone surrendering us against a guild we otherwise would have 100% swept - thanks for the 50 pt swing). I figured the many defensive wins were from lower guilds that we might not face if we started first. But this week we're already 5-3! Just imagine how anyone will fare when they actually raise the level cap and we can use our resources to get an actual level/gear advantage (in contrast to how O7 was handled).
So I can't really foresee a scenario in which we lose 1st, outside of our guild simply dying. When you remove the question of whether you'll lose individually in GW and the question of where you will finish in the rankings ... I mean, it loses its luster, right? What's the fun in competing if you already know the outcome.
Coli and FP are pretty similar right now. In FP, I know what time to wait until to make my final attack and, despite how awful Archer currently is, I usually do pretty well.
Coli is even easier because you can timeout Archer rows. Yesterday I wasted 2 coli attacks during the day on easy opponents for the contest. When reward time rolled around, I made my first attack - I used the same combo of heroes I've been using for the past couple of weeks, hit fast forward, and won. I sat in first for a while until someone beat me. I then attacked them, using the same combo of heroes I've been using for the past couple of weeks, hit fast forward, and won. I switched up my defense a little bit and got ~15 defensive wins in 10 minutes before someone finally took me out.
At 9:55, I made my final attack, using the same combo of heroes I've been using for the past couple of weeks, hit fast forward, and won.
I don't always win, but I win a great majority of my attacks and I only ever attack the highest non-guildmate in Coliseum. I can't hold defense, but few people can at this point.
So again, it seems like those two parts of the game are "solved". There is no more experimenting required with lines or combinations of heroes... just use what I've got and win.
I'm not really sure how they fix those issues. There are too many heroes, too many counters now ...
