I feel that I have to speak up on behalf of us who actually understand the current rune system and know how to use it.
Why shouldn't we who are smart enough to use it, and who take the time to Really get a hang of it Not get a benefit?
I have spent hundreds of hours, for real, cataloging the bonuses of each hero's Keystone, listing all bonuses on different levels, experimenting, sorting, changing runes to best match every tertiary to the right hero and generally thinking, counting, planning, reading and discussing runes to make sure that I understand them as well as possible.
For me, the runes ARE the game. They were what I was looking for in a game, even though they weren't implemented yet when I started playing.
Mastering the runes is what lets me compete way above my level and amount of money spent.
I help everyone who asks with them though, mainly in my guild of course, but also in VIP chat if I happen to wind up there. But having an in depth understanding of how every stat works and how they affect each other is hard to explain, especially as I do all of the math in my head, on autistic instinct.
Letting people choose traits will only result in hundreds of exact copies. Sure, it might actually just make it even easier for me, as I can always do a hero in a different way than what everyone else believe is "best", and if every hero is exactly the same, creating tailored counters will be a breeze, especially as I will also be able to choose.
Understanding the current system means that you can choose traits, but it takes patience and commitment to get it done properly.
Please don't force everyone to conform to the lowest common denominator. Supply more information to those who don't understand instead.
There's nothing wrong at all with the system, people just always hate what they don't understand. So educate instead of giving in to the whining of the ignorant (even if that seems to be the way of the world nowadays).
